Department of Gazetteers, Ministry of Culture, Maharashtra: Knowledge Sharing and Gazetteer Conference
In our tech-driven world, how can traditional gazetteers continue to be relevant? As AI and digital maps become more prevalent, do these detailed records of local knowledge still matter?
To encourage dialogue and discussion in this context, the National Seminar titled Gazetteers: Past, Present and Future is being organized on 5-6 August 2024. The Gazetteer Department, Government of Maharashtra and The Centre for Knowledge Alternatives came together to engage in conversations around how these records could be integrated with modern technology to keep them accessible and useful to the public. The Center is also signing an MOU with the state's Gazetteer Department as an effort to advance joint research projects.
The conference witnessed thought-provoking exchanges between the Gazetteer departments of different states - Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Gujarat, and Haryana - with every team sharing their unique experiences and challenges in preserving regional records and making their methods of documentation uniform across all states.
