Malati Rao has been making documentaries for the more than a decade, several of which have been broadcast on national and international television. Handmade in India, on India’s craft traditions and Born Behind Bars, about children growing up in prison, have been awarded and screened at several film festivals. She won Best Woman Director at the Bangkok International Documentary Awards in 2020 for The Geshema is Born, a film about Tibetan Buddhist Nuns seeking an education. Malati’s films have been part of several international pitching labs likes Docedge Kolkata, European Social Documentary(Eco Doc) and Tokyo Docs to name a few. She is currently directing a documentary produced by Drishyam Films, India and NHK Japan.
