India Growth Story - Aspiration for a Five Trillion Dollar Economy

Abstract:
This talk at the FLAME University will begin with a historical assessment of the Indian economic growth process during the last 7 decades and the transformative process witnessed by producers and consumers in India. It will particularly focus on the ‘golden era’ 2003-2011, the subsequent slowdown and the major factors behind it such as global environment, performance in exports and investment. Against this backdrop, it will examine the implications of the Prime Minister’s vision of a Five Trillion dollar economy by 2024-25, alternative scenarios for achieving it and implications on social welfare. The talk will conclude by a discussion of medium term structural constraints on the growth process.
