Abstract:

Man Made surfaces in urban areas retain heat after interacting with solar radiation. The increase in ambient temperature because of this within urban regions compared to its rural counterparts results in urban heat island. This presentation will take you through the basics of urban heat island and provide you a synoptic view of the research being done about it, globally.

Spatial distribution of morphological parameters is linked tightly with UHI experience at local level. When we examined the city of Delhi for the same, it was observed that greener parts of the city (gardens etc.) and mixed-land use areas actually performed badly w.r.t. UHI whereas the industrial zones with sparse mid rise buildings performed better. This study provided a counter intuitive view of the assumptions which are used in the literature for UHI and urban planning.

While understanding the importance of observing the individual man-made surfaces, the research adopted Arduino board based temperature and humidity sensors to characterise them. Daily-night patterns of the temperatures over select surfaces were observed. The research concluded that hyper-local sensing is possible using open-source hardware and can supplement satellite observations using continuous observations through the sensors.
