Bio of the speaker: Praneeta Mudaliar is an Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies and Sciences at Ithaca College in New York, USA. Praneeta’s scholarship and teaching interests revolve around micro and macro-level power dynamics, socio-cultural inequalities, and actor interactions in the governance of the commons. Apart from commons research, Praneeta studies pro-environmental behaviors among young adults, climate justice, and decolonizing environmental conservation.
Abstract: This session will introduce different goods and property rights, Garett Hardin’s Tragedy of the Commons, and Elinor Ostrom’s common-pool resource theory. By the end of the session, students will be able to distinguish between different kinds of goods and property rights through examples from the global North and the global South. Students will learn about alternatives to managing the commons, apart from Hardin’s solutions of privatization and government regulation. Students will evaluate approaches to managing the commons as well as challenges of managing the commons.
