Abstract
Trust among economic agents is a precondition for good business. Thus, the formation of trust in society has been extensively discussed in the literature. However, how government policies affect the state of trust in a society has not been discussed in the literature perhaps because it is taken for granted that good governance would improve the state of fellow feeling in business and economic transactions. We put such an assertion under the scanner in this theoretical paper. While enforcement of contracts reduces the dependence on trust, stringent measures to contain tax evasion may do exactly the opposite. Thus, we can generate conflicting and ambiguous impacts of apparently good policies on the necessary level of trust in society to conduct business efficiently. We also discuss how the presence of an informal segment affects such policy outcomes.

About the Speaker
Vivekananda Mukherjee received his PhD from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India. He studied Economics at Jadavpur University and Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He had been a research fellow at Planning Unit, Indian Statistical Institute, Delhi. Before joining BITS Pilani, he taught at Jadavpur University, University of Burdwan and RKM Residential College, Narendrapur. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow at INRA, France and Katholik University, Leuven, Belgium. He had been on visiting fellowship at University of Gothenburg, INRA, Technical University of Freiberg and Monash University. As a visiting professor, he has taught at Centre for Studies in Social Science, Calcutta, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, Kolkata, University of Gour Banga and Centre for Urban Economic Studies, University of Calcutta. He is also Associate Editor of South Asian Journal of Macroeconomics and Public Finance.Location : Tagore Lecture Theatre (TGR 102)
