HAPPENINGS @ FLAME

The latest happenings in the FLAME Community

FLAME University’s undergraduate students Ayesha Selwyn, Aarathi Ganesan, Ayush Goel, Karuna Srinivasan and Manasi Nene went to Wellesley College, USA; Yale University, USA; Boston University, USA; IESEG School of Management, France; and York University, Canada respectively during the academic year 2016-2017 as part of FLAME University’s study abroad programs.

There is an underlying sense of inferiority that most citizens of the developing world possess. While at Yale (and in New Haven), I realized that this inferiority is misplaced for the most part. Yale University is an extremely rigorous academic institution, spread across a gorgeously Gothic campus, in a diverse American city. And yet, there were so few differences between it and FLAME – barring the 400-year-old architecture, and the beautiful city of Pune – that I couldn’t help but feel empowered. Not because FLAME has ‘caught up’ with an Ivy League (which I really believe it has, academically), but because it has forged a similar identity, in a uniquely original Indian context. FLAME is competing with the world on its own parameters, and as a result has quite definitively changed the face of Indian higher education, from servile to assertive. You cannot help but be humbled in the face of all of this, not only as a proud Indian, but as a former product of an education system that encouraged boundaries as opposed to liberality. I loved the experience of studying at Yale University, but most importantly, I grew to love FLAME University even more.”
Aarathi Ganesan | Undergraduate Student - FLAME University | Summer abroad at Yale University, USA

FLAME University is committed to enhancing the educational experience of students by encouraging and providing them with opportunities to operate in multilingual and multicultural settings at an international level.  This exposure adds value to the students by diversifying their learning experience; enhances their employability by having demonstrable experience of living and learning in a culture which is different from their own. Studying in a new educational setting helps them to hone their extant skills and develop new ones.

Pre-conceived notions and biased assumptions are usually present before venturing into a new environment. However over time one realizes that these assumptions and notions are partly true, mostly false, and heavily exaggerated.”
Ayush Goel | Undergraduate Student - FLAME University | Semester abroad at Boston University, USA

The study abroad programs undertaken by FLAME University are aimed at providing students and faculty a global perspective on education and research, and prepare them for leadership and service in an interconnected globalized world. The international relations initiative at FLAME University essentially has the makings of a mutually beneficial relationship between the faculty and students of both.

“I came back as an adult, though I still won’t pretend I have all the answers, but Toronto taught me to stop looking, and just enjoy things wherever possible. Having friends across the world is brilliant, because they’re sure to have a different take on issues, and points of view that you couldn’t have imagined.”
Manasi Nene | Undergraduate Student - FLAME University | Semester abroad at York University, Canada

Through rigorous and collaborative programs, the Office of International Relations helps faculty and students build and strengthen the range of collaborative activities with institutions abroad. FLAME University has tie-ups with Wellesley College, Yale University, Kelley School of Business, Indiana University Bloomington, Babson Collaborative (Babson Build), Boston University (MET International) in the USA, York University, King's University College, and Quest University in Canada, IESEG School of Management In France and DHBW in Germany for undergraduate students.

“I learnt a lot from the Business Culture class. This class educated us on the different styles of etiquette, negotiation and work environment of different countries and the reasons behind them. I was partnered with a Mexican student and a Swiss student for this course and my experience was very enriching.”
Karuna Srinivasan | Undergraduate Student - FLAME University | Semester abroad at IESEG School of Management, France

Each year FLAME University is pushing its internationalization efforts to build and strengthen collaborations with revered universities across the globe with the aim of providing the best platform to interested and deserving students. Such programs help students learn from a global perspective and make them more tolerant to different cultures and views. It also gives them confidence to go out and use this experience during their professional careers while dealing with global clients. These study abroad programs are a part of FLAME University’s goals to prepare students who have a strong desire to learn and grow continually, welcome new ideas, value diversity and give their best towards excellence in all spheres of life.
