HAPPENINGS @ FLAME

The latest happenings in the FLAME Community

‘Integration of Liberal Arts education with Management learning at FLAME University has given me unique insights into the corporate world. I could develop a holistic approach and a deeper understanding of different cultures – crucial for any work environment,’ shares Kamalpreet Majhail, student of MBA (Communications Management). Kamalpreet recently got placed with Atos Syntel, a leading MNC in the digital business solutions domain. During the placement process, she says, her new employers were keen to know if she was a responsible team player. Kamalpreet tells us how her MBA training prepared her for this moment.

Kamalpreet had already gained more than five years of work experience that included stints with KPMG and The Indian Express. The specialized MBA (Communications Management) offered by FLAME University was the obvious choice to take her career to the next level. But picking Advertising and Branding as her Major, and Digital Marketing as Minor was the masterstroke. ‘I think my resume spoke for itself during the placement interview. They could gauge the profile I had built so far. I was the Class Representative and the Vice President of FLAME Entrepreneurship Lab. They were interested in the all-round profile,’ she says.

During the interaction, we asked Kamalpreet about the crucial placement day and the selection process that led to her getting chosen among numerous candidates. She says it involved a panel interview followed by a meeting with the CEO. ‘The panel interview lasted about 30 minutes. They asked me questions about my resume, current experience at the university, and participation in events and conclaves. I had interned with Dentsu Aegis Network (Mumbai) with their data science and strategy team. There were questions regarding that too during the interview,’ she shares.

Kamalpreet admits that there was one question that caught her off-guard: it was about a new, non-academic thing that she had recently learned. While giving a broad answer, she managed to keep her composure through tricky moments during the ~8-hour-long selection process. Her reward came when the panelists, along with the CEO of the company, came into the waiting room and announced her name in front of the other potential candidates. ‘All my peers stood up and congratulated me. It was a huge moment for me, and I appreciated their support. We have all been through many similar experiences,’ she shares.

These shared experiences come from the management program that, according to Kamalpreet, has been designed to provide students with a unique advantage. She believes understanding management of resources has set the foundation for their professional journeys. But learning subjects like Law, Psychology, and Public Policy has given her insights into different cultures and environments. Talking about some of the takeaways from the program, she says, ‘We also studied Economics, which has helped me with the macro and micro understanding of industries and economies. Advertising and communication theories have helped me understand human psychology specific to this industry.’

Kamalpreet feels the interdisciplinary learning – a crucial feature at FLAME University – has enabled her to gain insights on different issues and develop a broad perspective. ‘Liberal Arts education combined with Communications Management has been a very enriching experience. I can confidently talk about so many things beyond my MBA. It’s given me the ability to understand and appreciate both personal and professional aspects of life,’ she says, feeling confident about the road ahead.
