Benefits of digital detox: All the reasons why you should unplug to reboot life

Mental health and screen time: Digital detox is a period of intentional disconnection from technology. This practice not only offers you a chance to reset but also provides numerous benefits for your mental and physical well-being. Here are reasons why you should consider unplugging and how this simple step can lead to a more balanced, fulfilling life.
It’s a hyper-connected world, where your screens often dominate your attention, leaving little room for genuine interactions and personal reflection. As the lines between your digital and physical lives blur, you may be experiencing the negative effects of constant connectivity, ranging from increased stress to diminished mental clarity. Here is where digital detox comes in.

The excessive reliance on gadgets begins to comprise your physical, psychological, and social wellbeing in several ways, says Dr Sairaj Patki, Assistant Professor Department of Psychological Sciences, School of Liberal Education, FLAME University, Pune. “Unplugging from digital technology can thus have several direct and indirect benefits,” he adds.

According to a DataReportal survey, on an average, you spend almost 2.5 hours of the day on social media. If you add to this the usage of other digital technologies, the time spent would be even higher. This translates into less time spent on exercise, which can result in poorer physical fitness, obesity, and coronary heart issues in the long run.

“The extremely engaging nature of audio-visual content on social media causes a phenomenon called 'attentional inertia', which leads to further consumption and active brain states,” says Dr Patki, adding, “Excessive screentime, especially before going to bed, is thus detrimental to the quality of sleep due to the misaligned state of an active brain but a tired body.”

Dr Patki shares a few psychological and social benefits of digital detox:

Improves attention span: Complaints about shortened attention spans are common today. Studies show that distractions from notifications can affect concentration. For example, someone frequently checking their phone during work may find it harder to focus, leading to increased restlessness. The ‘out of sight, out of mind’ strategy can help adults disconnect by physically putting their devices away.

Reduces negative thoughts: Research indicates a weak to moderate link between digital media consumption and mental health issues. For instance, feelings of loneliness and inferiority can arise from comparing oneself to others on social media. A digital detox can reduce these negative thoughts and encourage greater self-awareness, allowing you to engage more with your immediate surroundings and relationships.

Enhances  real connections: Social media was designed to connect people, but it often leads to physical gatherings where real conversations are lacking. For example, a group of friends might be together yet spend the entire time on their phones. A digital detox encourages genuine interactions, helping you savour and strengthen your existing relationships.

Builds community: Real connections foster both physiological and psychological well-being. Engaging in group activities, such as community sports or book clubs, can reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation, enhancing social awareness and mindfulness. Like dieting, one must recognise that achieving a healthy state requires more than just temporary restraint.
