Basic Spanish I
Learning a foreign language broadens our horizons and helps us understand and appreciate cultures that are different from ours. It assumes special significance in the era of globalization which necessitates inter-cultural interaction and communication. Spanish is spoken throughout Latin America except for fora Brazil and enjoys the status of a second language in the USA, where it is spoken by approximately 13% of the population. It is the official language of 21 countries. A person acquainted with Spanish language and culture, needless to say, will have the edge over monolinguals.
Basic Spanish II
Basic Spanish 102 aims at reinforcing and honing the skills already learned at the 101 level with appropriate progression. The course aims at imparting the next level of language acquisition. It will provide a more advanced understanding of the language and the ability to use it.
Basic Spanish III
Basic Spanish 103 aims at reinforcing and honing the skills already learned in the first two levels with appropriate progression. It aims at imparting complex structures of the Spanish language to students. The course will provide more specific vocabulary and advanced grammar to enable students to attain fluency in authentic situations.
Basic French I
The Basic French I course aims at introducing the French language to students. The course will provide a basic understanding of the language, its construction, and usage in a socio-cultural context. Through a communicative-interactive approach, the course endeavors to develop students’ skills in listening, reading, writing, and speaking. It will enable students to use survival French as a means of practical communication.
Basic French II
The Basic French II course aims at imparting the next level of language acquisition to students. The course will provide a more advanced understanding of the language and ability to use it in the present and past in the context of personal and professional life. Through a communicative-interactive approach, the course endeavors to develop students’ skills in listening, reading, writing, and speaking.
Basic French III
The Basic French III course aims at imparting complex structures of the French language to students. The course will provide more specific vocabulary and advanced grammatical structures to enable better fluency in authentic situations. Through a communicative-interactive approach, the course endeavors to develop students’ skills in listening, reading, writing, and speaking.
Basic German I
The Basic German I course aims at introducing the German language to students. The course will provide a basic understanding of the language, its construction, and usage in a socio-cultural context. It will enable the student to use survival German as a means of practical communication. The course endeavors to develop students’ skills in listening, reading, writing, speaking through a communicative-interactive approach.
Basic German II
The Basic German II aims at reinforcing and honing the skills already learned in the basic level with appropriate progression. The course aims at imparting the next level of language acquisition. The course will provide an advanced understanding of the language and the ability to use it.

Basic German III aims at reinforcing and honing the skills already learned with appropriate progression. It aims at imparting complex structures of the German language to the students. The course will provide more specific vocabulary and advanced grammar to enable better fluency in authentic situations.
Basic Japanese I
The 101 course aims at introducing the Japanese language to the students. Learning a foreign language is the need of the hour; with globalization and liberalization, the world has become a common workplace. The course aims at providing the students a comprehensive understanding of the language, its construction and usage and the literary, cultural, social, and political context in which the language is spoken. It enables the student to use the language as a means of practical communication.

This module aims at introducing the Japanese language. It corresponds to the Japanese language Proficiency Test (JLPT) N5 A1 level of learning as designated in the CEFR (Common European Framework of References). This course seeks to impart basic knowledge of Japanese language and provide survival communication skills. It also focuses on introducing Japanese culture, etiquettes, expression.
Intermediate Japanese I
This module aims at introducing the Japanese language. It corresponds to the Japanese language Proficiency Test (JLPT) N5 A1 level of learning as designated in the CEFR (Common European Framework of References). This module seeks to impart basic knowledge of Japanese language and provide survival communication skills. The course focuses on introducing Japanese culture, etiquettes, expression.
Intermediate Japanese II
This module aims at introducing the Japanese language. It corresponds to the Japanese language Proficiency Test (JLPT) N5 A1 level of learning as designated in the CEFR (Common European Framework of References). This module seeks to impart basic knowledge of Japanese language and provide survival communication skills. The course focuses on introducing Japanese culture, etiquettes, expression.
Basic Persian I
The Basic Persian I course aims at introducing the Persian language to the students. It is an ancient language whose influence has been felt far and wide including in India, being the language of the court of many dynasties. The course aims at providing the students a basic understanding of the language through an interactive approach, its construction and usage, and the literary, cultural, social, and political context in which the language is spoken. It enables the student to use the language as a means of practical communication.
Basic Persian II
The Basic Persian II course aims at introducing the Persian language to the students by building upon the lessons of the 101 course. Persian is an ancient language whose influence has been felt far and wide including in India, being the language of the court of many dynasties. The course aims at providing the students a comprehensive understanding of the language, its construction and usage, and the literary, cultural, social, and political context in which the language is spoken. It enables the student to use the language as a means of practical communication.
Basic Persian III
The Basic Persian III aims at improving students’ basic communication abilities in all the four skills: speaking, writing, reading, and listening while building on the previous two modules. The course will provide more specific vocabulary and advanced grammar to help students with the Persian way of communicating in everyday life scenarios.
Basic Mandarin I
This course targets the students who are interested in starting to learn Mandarin Chinese (especially in the traditional version), ready to make efforts in learning the language and wish to develop the knowledge as well as experience the culture of Han Chinese society. The two-credit course provides students with an elementary level of Chinese characters (approximately 100 characters in total). Students can function in basic social interactive conversations, understand and express one’s self regarding certain topics such as identity, interest, places and time, schedule arrangement, etc. with four skills including listening ability, speaking ability, reading ability, and writing ability.
Basic Mandarin II
The Basic Mandarin II targets the students who are ready to the next level from Basic Mandarin I, and wish to continue to develop the knowledge as well as experience the culture of Han Chinese society. The two-credit course provides students with an elementary level of Chinese characters (approximately 100 characters in total). Students can function in basic social interactive conversations, understand and express one’s self regarding certain topics such as identity, interest, places and time, schedule arrangement, etc. with five skills including listening ability, speaking ability, reading ability, writing ability, and typing.
Basic Sanskrit
This course aims to develop basic competence in vocabulary, grammar and usage of Sanskrit along with the ability to translate simple passages to English/Hindi. By exposing the students to select literary works, an appreciation of the rich literature in the language is sought to be inculcated.
Basic Urdu I
Basic Urdu is the introductory Urdu Language courses offered in the first term of the first year of the undergraduate program in liberal education. It aims at introducing and familiarizing students (who are already familiar with conversational Hindi) with Urdu script and Urdu literature (mostly Urdu poetry). Through a communicative-interactive approach, the course endeavors to develop students’ skills in reading, writing, speaking/reciting and comprehension in Urdu. No prior background in Urdu is required for this course, although familiarity with conversational Hindi is an essential prerequisite.
Basic Urdu II
Basic Urdu II is the second Urdu course offered in the second term. While this course continues to work rigorously on developing students’ language skills, it also endeavors to familiarize students with the historical, cultural, and literary development of the Urdu language through the last eight centuries. The course starts in the thirteenth century with the literary contributions of the legendary bard Amir Khusro; goes through the golden era of the masters, Meer and Ghalib and their contemporaries; and culminates in the twentieth century with Sir Mohammad Iqbal’s poetry.
